bright and shiny

Taxes are done (finally) and our returns will be pleasant! :)

I went ahead and ordered myself a present, a bright and shiny new laptop, in sunshine yellow. What better way to welcome spring? And it happened to be on sale, this weekend only, for $330 off of $999. You know I’m a sucker for a good deal! It’s nothing fancy as far as laptops go, but it’s more than enough to do what I need it to do, which is write.

Actually, I take that back, a writer needs Word. It doesn’t come with Word or Excel, which is a pretty crappy scheme from Microsoft to get you to spend $150 more to buy the Office package, which I did not do. Hubby assures me that this can be worked out ;)

And after my bright and shiny present, we will still have a hefty chunk to put into our “house fund”. Happy tax year to us!

So in about three weeks, you all will be hearing from me a lot more often, from whatever room I want to write in, whether it be blogs, or novels, or emails, whether Dylan is awake or not. Writing and writing and more writing. Yay! :)

I am terribly disappointed that 10,000 B.C. is getting really bad reviews. Rottentomatoes is giving it 9%! Yahoo reviewers are giving it bad reviews too. Now, I know that I am a world-class dork, but I was really hoping this one would be good. I am fascinated with pre-history, and was hoping this might be somewhat factual, with a storyline, like the best History Channel documentary ever! Apparently, a common complaint is that it is completely inaccurate, so maybe I’m better off staying home to watch the History Channel ;)

Across the Universe is out on DVD now, bought, and watched twice since I bought it! I am in love with this movie!

I am Legend is also out on DVD now, and definitely worth at least a rental.

the mondays

Peter Gibbons: Let me ask you something. When you come in on Monday, and you’re not feelin’ real well, does anyone ever say to you, ‘Sounds like someone has a case of the Mondays’?

Lawrence: No. No, man. Shit, no, man. I believe you’d get your ass kicked sayin’ something like that, man.

hard at work

hard at work

Did you ever spend a whole week or more drafting an absolutely non-monumental blog entry, just because you couldn’t find the right way to get it out there? Well that is me these past few weeks. Because I might jinx it, or decide that the whole project IS stupid after all and scrap the whole thing. So this absolutely non-Earth-shattering non-announcement is that I still seem to be writing this novel.

I just keep showing up, the advice of my brilliant friend and fellow writer, Kim, and the story comes. It’s SLOW, a page here or there in the space of the Backyardigans and Sesame Street, but every day, it just keeps coming. And I am so very surprised that it keeps coming. Through nasty colds and family obligations, it is there brewing in the back of my mind. Through distractions, new Sims EPs, TV shows that my husband has gotten me hooked on, great movies and music, it’s still there. I have not yet grown tired of my characters or decided they are in fact absolutely too stupid to be worthy of having their story told, which has happened several times before when I thought I had the beginnings of a novel. Every day the story grows, whether by words, or some plotting or character notes, just by showing up. Just by allowing the story to brew itself, present itself to me.

So I guess I just keep going with it. Holy crap, I just might be a writer after all!

almost got away with it

I am sick. I am a slobbering, worthless pile of snot! I always seem to catch something right now, at the butt-end of winter, just when I think I’m about to escape the cold/flu season free and clear. My sweet hubby cleaned the house for me last night and brought home orange juice and the fancy Puffs with lotion and Vicks. Even Dylan is being an angel for me.

I am excited about the primary elections going on today, and so jealous of all the attention my friends in Ohio are getting right now. Both of the candidates (Hillary especially) have been to Toledo several times in the past couple of weeks. None of the candidates have been coming to Michigan since we fucked up our primary. But how exciting it must be to be right there in the middle of everything as such an important time in this presidential race!

I hope everyone gets out to VOTE today! I can’t wait to see what happens tonight. We should pretty much know who our candidate is after these results.
